DIY Woodland Felt "Paper" Doll Series - Spring Bunny

Hello from The Annex Felt Studio! Spring is (hopefully) around the corner and today I’m going to walk you through the last of the Woodland Doll series. This sweet little bunny comes with a new type of accessory; tiny little roses. They can be made into a bouquet, a flower crown or a little brooch.

Materials:

Optional Material:

  • Freezer Paper
  • Heat'n Bond Iron on + iron
  • Pencil
  • Plastic doll eyes
  • Sewing machine

A note about Heat'n Bond: while it is optional, I highly recommend using it with this project. It will add stability to your pieces, make your cuts sharper and allow you to easily iron on tiny details. For any pattern pieces that have 2 sides, I only use Heat'n Bond on one side.

Instructions:

Cut out all pattern pieces. My favorite way to do this is to print out the pattern or bring it up on a tablet and trace onto the matte side of the freezer paper with a pencil. Use a bit of washi tape to secure the paper before tracing. Iron the shiny side of the freezer paper onto the felt and cut out the pattern pieces. The freezer paper will peel off easily and can be re-used.

If you are using Heat n Bond, iron freezer paper onto one size of the felt and Heat n Bond onto the other. DO NOT peel the backing off the Heat n Bond until after you have both the freezer paper and Heat n Bond adhered to the fabric! Once both are attached, peel the backing off the Heat n Bond off and cut out your pattern piece.

Making the Bunny:

If you want to attach the face details by stitching them on, do so before you assemble the bunny’s body. If you intend on gluing them down, assemble the bunny first using a blanket stitch or sew the pieces together with a sewing machine. If you use a sewing machine you will have to go very slowly; manually turning the hand wheel will allow you to have control of the project in tricky areas. If you are sewing the bunny with a sewing machine, attach the eyes last.

For the tail, cut a felt ball in half and glue to the back of the bunny:

Attach the eyes, nose, cheeks, belly, mouth and inside of ears

Clothing/Accessories: This is a great way to use up scraps and take a look at what you’ve gone on hand. For the Easter egg, I used pinking shears to cut the designs. I used ric-rac on the dress and carrot and a vintage button on the basket. I tied tiny bows with colored twine and glued them to the dress. I’d love to see what you come up with!

Making the flowers: Twist the floral wire (or pipe cleaner) into a coil and bend the stem down

Do not line the roses and the leaves with heat n bond. Roll the rose starting from the thicker side and glue the end.

Poke a hole in the middle of the leaves and thread the wire through the hole. Glue the rose to the base of the leaf.

Making the basket: Glue (or stitch) each side of the basket and attach the handle. Add buttons to the sides:

The woodland crew is now complete!
