DIY Woodland Felt "Paper" Doll Series - Autumn Fox

Hello my fellow felt loving friends! Sonya here from @TheAnnexFeltStudio, and I'm back with the second project in my Woodland felt paper doll series. In this tutorial I’ll walk you through the steps to make an adorable fox, cozy fall accessories and a not so spooky Halloween costume!

Materials:

Optional Material:

  • Freezer Paper
  • Heat 'n Bond Iron on + iron
  • Pencil
  • Plastic doll eyes

Autumn Fox Pattern Pieces

A note about Heat 'n Bond: while it is optional, I highly recommend using it with this project. It will add stability to your pieces, make your cuts sharper and allow you to easily iron on tiny details. For any pattern pieces that have 2 sides, I only use Heat 'n Bond on one side.

Instructions:

Cut out all pattern pieces. I bring it up on a tablet and trace onto the matte side of the freezer paper with a pencil. Iron the shiny side of the freezer paper onto the felt and cut out the pattern pieces. The freezer paper will peel off easily and can be re-used.

Making the Fox:

If you want to attach the face details by stitching them on, do so before you assemble the fox’s body. If you intend on gluing them on, assemble the fox first using a blanket stitch or sew the pieces together with a sewing machine. I sewed the pieces together first, then attached the face details.

Mouth/muzzle: Stitch the mouth. I used a simple straight stitch and then a French knot. Attach the muzzle to the bear and then the nose to the muzzle.

Eyes/Cheeks: I used plastic doll eyes, but you can also cut felt circles or use tiny buttons. Attach the cheeks.

Clothing/Accessories: This is your chance to be creative and make the project your own. I’ve used vintage buttons in this project but I encourage you to look at what you’ve got in your stash! If you want to add hand stitched details, make sure to finish that first before assembling the layers together so that the back of the stitches are hidden by the 2nd layer.

Cardigan and Jacket: Attach the two main pieces together. Attach the trim and hearts. Attach the buttons.

Pumpkin and Skeleton Costume: Attach both sides of the skeleton costume together and then attach the bones. If you have a Cricut or other cutting machine you can cut the bones from white iron on vinyl. As you can see it gives the bones a nice crisp look!

For the Pumpkin: Attach both sides of the main pumpkin together. Cut a 7 inch piece of thread, yarn or string (whatever you happen to have in your stash) and tie a knot on each end. Hide the knots under the right and left sides of the last layer of the pumpkin.

Accessories: For the coffee, adhere the layers onto the main base. For the scarf, attach the tails of the scarf to the main scarf

If you’ve made the project from my first tutorial, you can now mix and match the clothing and accessories!
