DIY Woodland Felt "Paper" Doll Series - Summer Bear

Hi! I'm Sonya of @TheAnnexFeltStudio, and I’m excited to share with you the first of four tutorials where we will be creating a charming collection of woodland felt dolls in a paper doll style.
Inspired by childhood memories and nostalgia, each woodland doll will feature one of The Felt Store’s Premium Wool Blend Craft Felt Sheet Value Packs.
I’ll also show you my favorite way to transfer patterns and give you some tips and tricks along the way.

Materials:

Optional Material:

Summer Bear Pattern Pieces

A note about Heat 'n Bond: while it is optional, I highly recommend using it with this project. It will add stability to your pieces, make your cuts sharper and allow you to easily iron on tiny details. For any pattern pieces that have 2 sides, I only use Heat 'n Bond on one side.

Instructions:

Cut out all pattern pieces. My favorite way to do this is to print out the pattern or bring it up on a tablet and trace onto the matte side of the freezer paper using a pencil. Use a bit of washi tape to secure the paper before tracing. Iron the shiny side of the freezer paper onto the felt and cut out the pattern pieces. The freezer paper will peel off easily and can be re-used.

If you are using Heat 'n Bond, iron freezer paper onto one size of the felt and Heat 'n Bond onto the other. DO NOT peel the backing off the Heat n Bond until after you have both the freezer paper and Heat 'n Bond adhered to the felt!
Once both are attached, peel the backing off the Heat 'n Bond off and cut out your pattern piece.

Making the Bear:

If you want to attach the face details by stitching them on, do so before you assemble the bear’s body. If you intend on gluing them down, assemble the bear first using a blanket stitch or sew the pieces together with a sewing machine.

Mouth/muzzle: If you want to attach the face details by stitching them on, do so before you assemble the bear’s body. If you intend on gluing them down, assemble the bear first using a blanket stitch or sew the pieces together with a sewing machine.

Eyes: I used plastic doll eyes, but you can also cut felt circles or use tiny buttons.

Clothing/Accessories: This is your chance to be creative and make the project your own. I’ve used vintage buttons and ribbon found in my stash.
If you want to add hand stitched details to the any of the clothing, make sure to finish that first before assembling the layers together so that the back of the stiches is hidden by the 2nd layer.

Overalls: Stich the main overalls together. Attach the cuffs and heart. Attach buttons or small circles to the ends of the straps, then glue the straps to the overalls.

Dress, Hat and Swimsuit: Stitch together and decorate as you wish.

Accessories: For the camera and ice cream adhere the layers together using Heat n Bond. For the camera, attach the 2 main layers together, then attach the trim at the top and bottom, attach the lens and the viewfinder.
