Direct to Film (DTF) Transfer on Felt: Tips & Tricks

Felt is one of my favorite materials to work with because it's versatile, durable, and perfect for everything from handcrafted décor to custom accessories. While felt projects have plenty of charm on their own, I've found that DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are an easy way to take them to the next level.

Hello, this is Lorrie Everitt from @makeandmerryco and I am happy to share with you how I add DTF transfers to my felt projects. I primarily use DTF transfers in two ways: to add professional branding to felt items I've created and to embellish felt pennants and patches with colorful designs, logos, and graphics. The combination of soft felt and vibrant DTF transfers creates a unique finished product that stands out while still maintaining a handmade look and feel.

If you've been wondering whether DTF transfers work on felt, the answer is yes - with a few helpful techniques. In this post, I'll share my favorite DIY tips for applying DTF transfers to both wool blend and 100% wool craft felt successfully, along with some lessons I've learned along the way to help you achieve clean, long-lasting results using a Cricut mini press.

Gather your supplies and tools:

* I purchase my DTF transfers from Polar Transfers, a local Canadian business. I recommend adding their DTF free sample sheet with your order. If you are in the USA, I suggest doing a quick internet search for a comparable company that delivers in your area.

Before you start:
Because felt can be sensitive to high heat, a few adjustments are required to get the perfect press.

Temperature: 300°F to 320°F (148°C to 160°C). I use a Cricut mini press on the middle heat setting.Time: 10 to 15 seconds on each area of the DTF transfer that you are ironing.Pressure: Medium to heavy.Peel: Cold peel works best for felt. Allow the transfer to completely cool to the touch before carefully peeling off the carrier film.

 

  1. Pre-Press the Felt: Place your felt on a hard, heat-resistant surface and press it for 5 seconds to remove any moisture and smooth out wrinkles.
  1. Position the Transfer: Place the DTF transfer face-up (white powder backing facing the felt and clear film on top).
  1. Press: Apply heat. Because you must keep the Mini moving continuously to avoid hot spots, move it slowly in tight, overlapping circles. Count to 15 seconds for the section you are working on before moving to the next part of the design. You need to apply enough heat to successfully activate the DTF adhesive without burning the wool fibres. You must actively press down firmly on the handheld Mini since it lacks the native weight of a standard heat press.
  1. Cool & Peel: Allow the DTF transfer to cool down completely before peeling the film back.
  1. Finishing Press: Place the heat-resistant pressing sheet over the design and press for another 5–10 seconds to fully lock the ink fibers into the felt.
  1. Remove the heat-resistant pressing sheet and allow to cool completely. And that’s it!

Tips for Success:
I highly recommend that you use some scraps of felt and some test DTF transfers before committing to large projects.

Wool blend felt can be prone to melting if the heat is too high. If the wool felt starts looking shiny or flattened around the design, reduce your pressing time or allow the press to cool slightly.

If your design is larger than the base of the Mini press, mentally divide the graphic into quadrants. Press each section completely for 12–15 seconds rather than dragging the iron randomly over the entire project at once.
