Floral Felt Wine Bottle Gift Topper

Gifting a bottle of wine is a classic and sophisticated gesture, but adding a handmade touch can elevate it to a whole new level. Creating a wine bottle gift topper using felt flowers, leaves, ribbon, and wooden rings is a delightful way to personalize your gift.

Hello, this is Lorrie Everitt from @makeandmerryco and I am so happy to share with you how to re-create this felt gift topper.

Let’s gather our supplies and tools:

  • Felt – I prefer to use either 100% wool or wool blend felt when I make felt flowers, but you can also use acrylic felt.
  • Floral Felt Wine Bottle Gift Topper Pattern (downloadable below)
  • Felt balls or Mini wool felt balls (please note that the mini felt balls are currently only available in Canada)
  • 2” wide linen ribbon (or 2” ribbon of your choice)
  • 2” diameter wood ring
  • 18-gauge wrapped floral wire
  • Fabric scissors, pliers and wire cutters
  • Fine tip hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Sewing needle and thread (color to match the ribbon)
  • Clover mini-iron*, hair spray and wool ironing mat
  • Curling wand and heat-resistant glove

*Adding texture and shape to your felt using the Clover mini-iron and the curling wand is not necessary for this project, but if you would like to learn something new and give your felt flowers a little more texture and dimension give it a try.

Let’s get started:

Download and print the template on standard 8.5 x 11” paper, size as is. Use the pattern template to cut six petals, five leaves and one calyx.

1. Cut the felt ball or mini felt ball in half. Note: You only need one half mini felt ball for each flower.
2. Spray hairspray on one side of each felt leaf and petal and allow to dry.
3. Using the template as a guide, use the mini iron to add crease lines to each of the leaves. Note: see this blog post for more details on how to use a mini iron on felt.

    4. Make a small slit in each of the petals, as shown to create two flaps.
    5. Let’s start to give the petals a little more shape.
    6. Add a small dab of glue as shown, then cross the two flaps and hold in place to form a curved petal.
    7. We want to give the petals an even deeper curve and it’s possible to do that using a curling wand and a heat-resistant glove. Cup your hand while holding the petal in the palm of your hand and press the barrel end of the curling wand into the petal.
    8. Press the curling wand into the petal until you achieve a nice, curved petal shape.
    9. Add a dab of glue to the flat bottom of the wool felt ball half and attach one of the petals to the ball.
    10. Glue two more petals to the back of the mini ball as shown.
    11. Add a second layer of petals using the remaining three petals.
    12. Cut a 18-gauge wrapped floral wire so it’s 4” long and bend one end as shown.
    13. Cut a small slit in the center of the calyx so it can be added to the wire stem
    14. Add glue to the bent end of the wire stem
    15. Attach the flower and hold until dry.
    16. Add additional glue to the calyx to adhere it to the back of the floral petals as shown.
    17. Add a dab of glue to the first leaf so you can attach the leaf to the wire stem just below the calyx.
    18. Pinch the leaf around the wire stem until the glue has dried.
    19. Glue a second leaf to the wire stem, just below the first leaf and on an angle.
    20. Continue adding the additional leaves down the wire stem, keeping in mind that we are trying to cover up the wire stem.
    21. Trim the wire stem when the last leaf has been attached so that it does not extend past the leaves.
And now we are ready to sew the ribbon to the wood ring and then we’ll attach the felt flower to the ribbon to finish.
    22. Cut the ribbon to approximately 15” in length.
    23. Sew the ribbon to the wood ring as shown.
    24. Use the finished image of the project to get a better idea of how far below the ring to attach the flower to the ribbon. Sew the flower and leaves in place to the top half of the ribbon until it is secure.
Note: By sewing the flower just to one side of the ribbon, your stitches will be hidden by the back half of the ribbon.
If you feel like the ribbon is too long to fit on your wine bottle, simply cut the ends of the ribbons to re-size.
For me, gift wrapping is my favorite part of gift-giving, and creating handmade gift toppers has become a beloved gift giving tradition. Not only does this DIY project make your present stand out, but the topper itself can be regifted and cherished.
I have added iron on vinyl lettering to some of my felt flower wine bottle gift toppers to make sure that everyone knows that these gift toppers are supposed to be regifted and reused.
This DIY project is not just about the final product, but about enjoying the process of crafting something special. So next time you’re preparing a wine gift, consider this DIY project. It’s a fun and rewarding craft that turns a simple bottle into a memorable present. Please share your versions of this fun gift topper on social media by tagging @The_Felt_Store and @MakeandMerryCo on Instagram.
    Happy Crafting!
