DIY Valentine's Day Cookies

The season of chocolate kisses, candy grams, love letters, and conversation hearts is quickly approaching! With the holiday season behind us—and even more chocolate coming in April (hello, Easter Bunny)—it can feel like sugar overload, especially if you have a little one who crashes after a sugar rush. If you're looking for a fun way to show you care without the crash or extra calories, my DIY felt Valentine's Day cookies are the perfect solution. These cute and simple hand-sewn cookies are completely customizable, utterly adorable, and will last years longer than their edible counterparts. Follow along with my free step-by-step tutorial, complete with a template, to create your own!

Let's gather our supplies and tools:

Instructions:

1. I’m using a Cricut Maker to cut out my felt pieces, but you can also print the template, attach it to your felt, and trace with a disappearing ink tool before cutting with fabric scissors. If you’re cutting felt by hand, make sure to secure the template to the felt using pins to prevent slipping during tracing and cutting. My cookies are 4 inches wide by 3 inches high, but feel free to adjust the template size to suit your needs. Keep in mind, though, that the smaller your cookies, the trickier it may be to add details like words during “cookie decorating” time.

a. Once your pieces are cut using your preferred method, it’s time to start sewing your Valentine’s cookies together.
Pro Tip: Not familiar with some of the stitches? You can find simple and helpful tutorials on YouTube for all the stitches mentioned in this tutorial.

2. Attach the colored felt pieces. Begin by placing a colored piece of felt in the center of a beige piece. Using a running stitch and thread that matches the colored felt, stitch all the way around the edge of the colored piece until it’s securely attached to the beige base. Repeat this process for all the colored pieces and beige pieces.

3. Now comes the fun part—decorating! Add sprinkles, embellishments, and sweet words to your cookies for a personal touch. This step is completely up to your creativity! For my cookies, I used single straight stitches and French knots to mimic sprinkles. You can also add seed beads, gems, or pearls for extra flair. The possibilities are endless!

4. To personalize your cookies with words, use a disappearing ink tool to write out your guides directly onto the felt. Then, use a backstitch to carefully sew the letters on, following your guide. Make sure to tie off any loose ends securely when you’re finished to ensure all your hard work stays intact and doesn’t come undone over time.

5. With all your embellishments and decorations in place, it’s time to stitch the beige backing to your decorated "iced" cookie tops. Carefully align a plain beige piece with a completed cookie top, ensuring the edges match up precisely. Use a blanket stitch to sew around the edges, leaving a small opening to add fiberfill stuffing. This will give your cookies a soft, plush feel while maintaining their adorable shape.

6. Grab your trusty chopstick and start stuffing your cookie until you reach your desired level of plushness. For a realistic look, keep the cookies slightly flatter—similar to real ones! While fiberfill works great, you can also opt for quilt batting, which comes in a flat format and gives a smooth, even finish. Customize the fluffiness to match your vision of the perfect cookie!

7. Once you've added the fiberfill stuffing, it's time to close up your cookie. Pick up where you left off with your blanket stitch and carefully sew around the remaining edge until it's fully closed. Tie off securely to ensure everything stays in place.

And just like that, your first felt cookie is complete! Repeat the process for the rest of your collection, and you'll have a set of adorable, guilt-free Valentine’s treats ready to spread love and joy. Celebrate the season with handmade charm—no sugar rush required!

We'd love to see your finished cookies! Share your versions on social media and be sure to tag @the.felted.fawn and @the_felt_store.
