What You Will Need

Downloadable PDF Pattern:

Step 1: Create your templates.

  • Print out the following shapes or use the SVG file to cut out the shapes on a Cricut.
    • Mushroom cap: a larger oval shape for the lid of the purse (cut two)
    • Mushroom stem: a smaller oval to attach to the base (cut two)
    • Spacers: two 2.5” wide strips for the cap and another two 2” wide strips the stem. These pieces will coordinate with the colors you choose and be the length that will wrap around the curve of the mushroom cap and step. You can get a rough idea of the length you will need by measuring the curve of the oval pieces (refer to photo).
    • Mushroom cap spots: small white circles (cut several)

Step 2: Cut out your felt pieces (not applicable for Cricut users).

  1. Pin your templates onto the felt sheets and carefully cut them out.
  2. Using beige or white felt for the stem, cut two of the same shape and size pieces. Cut a 2” wide strip that will fit along the curve of the smaller oval, leaving the flat edge on the top open.
  3. Using red felt for the cap (or whatever color you went with!), cut two of the same shape and size pieces. Cut a 2.5” wide strip that will fit along the curve of the larger oval, leaving the flat edge on the bottom open.
  4. Cut out several imperfect white circles for the spots.

Tip: using the template to cut out the pieces gives you more freedom to make any changes you want. For example, if you wanted more space for goodies, you could make the base taller.

Optional: Cut lining pieces if you want the purse to have extra sturdiness inside. I skipped this step this time, but I plan to try it in the future.

Step 3: Assemble the mushroom base.

  1. Stitch one of the smaller white oval base pieces and the 2” wide strip together along the curved edges of the sides and bottom, leaving the flat area open, as the top.
  2. Stitch the second smaller white oval piece onto the other side of the 2” wide strip. This will create a basket-like form.

Tip: I used a blanket stitch for all of the sewing on this project, but you can also use a hot glue gun or a sewing machine to attach the pieces together.

Step 4: Create the sliding cap lid.

  1. Sew the white felt spots onto the cap to create the classic Fly Agaric mushroom look. Be sure to attach a few spots to each piece on the surface that will face outward.
  2. Take one of the larger oval cap pieces. Sew the 2.5” wide strip (one that is the same color as the cap) along the curved edge leaving the straight bottom edge open.
  3. Stitch the second larger oval piece to the other side of the 2.5” wide strip, make sure the two cap pieces line up. If the strip is too long, cut it to the correct length now, leaving only the flat edge of the oval without the strip sewn to it.
  4. Carefully use your scissors to cut holes into the 2.5” wide strip, make sure to line up the base of the mushroom with the cap so you can see roughly where the straps will go before you cut. My holes ended up being more like tiny square shapes.

Step 5: Attach the strap.

  1. Secure one end of the nylon cord on the inside of the 2” wide strip on the mushroom base. I used my sewing machine for this part to make sure it extra sturdy.
  2. Feed the other end of the nylon cord up and through the holes you made in the cap piece (refer to photos), and then back down through the hole on the opposite side.
  3. Secure the final end of the nylon cord to the opposite side of the base of the 2” wide strip.
  4. Slide the mushroom cap down so it covers the open top of the base — this acts as the purse lid!

Step 6: Finishing touches.

  • Feel free to add your personal creative touch! You could add decorative embroidery around the edges or stem for detail.
  • Or, make it functional by lining the inside with a pocket of felt.
  • For extra charm, add a small felt flower or leaf to the base.

Now you have your very own Felt Mushroom Purse — complete with a magical sliding cap lid! It’s a fun accessory that doubles as wearable art.
