DIY Cotton-Lined Felt Hood

There’s something timeless about a felt hood — cozy, dramatic, and surprisingly versatile. This version is lined with cotton for comfort, structured enough to hold its shape, and finished with optional felt ranunculus flowers for a romantic touch. Below is a step-by-step guide for creating your own.
This hood was inspired by a pattern originally found on Instagram at @t.r.o.z.o.s, which my friend @foreveralter.squamish and I modified slightly to work better with felt as one of the materials.
Materials Needed
- Wool Blend Craft Felt for the outer hood (I used Antique Gold)
- Cotton fabric (for the lining)
- Large craft paper (roll)
- Pencil
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Fabric scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Chopstick or pencil (for turning corners)
- Needle and thread (for hand stitching)
- Hot glue gun (for embellishments)
- Felt scraps (for flowers)
- Silk thread and a large bead (optional closure)

Pattern Measurements:

Cutting the Fabric
- Cotton lining:
- Cut the back edge of the pattern on the fold.
- Leave 1 cm seam allowance.
- Felt outer layer:
- Use the same pattern as the lining.
- Leave 1 cm seam allowance on the side that isn’t on the fold.
- The fold placement depends on how your felt is cut — ours landed on the top edge, but it may be on the back edge instead.
- Sew the back edge together.

Sewing the Hood
- With the cotton lining, stitch the top edge together. Make sure that right sides are facing, with the pattern on the inside.

- Felt is thick, so take time to press the seams open. We used an iron to make sure everything stayed flat.
- The tip of the hood can be tricky — refer to a photo if you have one for how the seam should be pressed.

- Pin the felt hood and cotton hood together, right sides facing.

- Open the hood fully and stitch:
- Along the front edge.
- Also stitch along the bottom edge where the ties will sit (sew everywhere there are pins).
- Leave 10 cm open at the back of the neck so you can turn the hood right side out.

Turning and Finishing
- Turn the hood right side out through the 10 cm opening that was left.

- Use a chopstick or pencil to gently push out the pointed tips.
- Iron all seams so they lay flat and crisp.

- Use an invisible hand stitch to neatly close the opening at the back of the neck.

- Your lined felt hood is now complete!

Optional: Felt Ranunculus Embellishments
To decorate the hood, create felt ranunculus flowers:
- Cut six 10 cm squares of felt in your chosen colors.
- Cut each square into a circle, then cut the circle into a spiral, gradually widening as you move inward.
- Leave a small circle at the very center.

- Starting from the outer tip, roll the spiral inward, securing with hot glue as you go.
- Tuck the center circle under the roll and glue in place.
- Repeat these steps until all six squares become flowers.

Attaching and Styling
I attached the flowers to the front of the hood at chest level. For closure, I added:
- A loop of silk thread under one side of the hood.
- I also added a large bead on the other side.
This allows the hood to be worn closed if desired. Another option is to leave the hood unembellished and simply tie the ends together.
