DIY Felt Bow-Tie

A no-glue, all-style project for fashion-forward makers of all ages!

Hello world!

Annika here from @AKKIKA and I’m going to show you how to make a fantastic, easy, and super fun little bow tie for your loved ones (or yourself, no judgment here). Whether you're crafting for a dapper pup, a stylish tot, or your own accessory drawer, this felt bow is a must-make. Best part? No glue required! This design is all about simplicity and style, thanks to the amazing Designer Felts from The Felt Store.

Pro tip:
keep an eye out for their remnant sales—they’re perfect for mixing and matching colors, and they pop up randomly (follow their socials to stay in the loop!).

Did You Know? A Quick Bow Tie History Drop

Bow ties have a surprisingly cool backstory! They actually originated back in the 17th century, when Croatian mercenaries tied scarves around their necks to keep their shirt collars closed. The French, being the fashion trendsetters that they are, noticed this look and quickly turned it into a style statement—voilà, the bow tie was born! Over time, it became a symbol of intellect, individuality, and class, famously worn by figures like Winston Churchill, Fred Astaire, and even Bill Nye the Science Guy. Today, bow ties are the ultimate mix of quirky and chic, adding personality to any outfit. And now you’re about to make your very own!

Materials & Supplies:

  • Designer Felt in two colors (one for the bow body, one for the center wrap)
  • Printed bow tie template (see below)
  • X-Acto knife or rotary cutter
  • Self-healing cutting mat
  • Chalk or fabric marker
  • Optional: hair clips or bow tie straps (Amazon has great options)

Let’s Get Crafty!

  1. Download and print the bow-tie template. You can use cardstock for a sturdier guide, or regular paper works too!
  2. Pick your felt colors. Choose your primary color for the bow body and a secondary color for the tie in the center. This is where your creativity can really shine!
  3. Trace your template onto the felt using chalk or a fabric marker. Make sure it’s secure while tracing so your lines stay clean.
  4. Place your felt on a self-healing cutting mat and carefully cut out the pieces using your X-Acto knife. Clean edges make all the difference!
  1. Fold the body piece inward to meet at the center. Connect the arrow with the opposing side to form the bow shape—it should start to look super cute right about now.
  2. Take your secondary color strip and wrap it tightly around the center of the bow through the holes- secure it snugly—no glue needed!

And just like that—you’ve got a fabulous felt bow tie! Or a bow for your hair. Or a cute accent for a gift box. You can add a clip, strap, or pin to make it work however you like.

Bonus Tips:
Make a bunch in different colors for every season. Try mini versions for pets or dolls. Add sparkle, stitching, or personal flair!
