Bespoke Memory Box

Create sweet memories that last with this heartfelt gift idea!

Bespoke means "made for a particular person", so when making this darling keepsake, don’t forget to make it your own! Every colorful detail from felt to embroidery floss is yours to choose, as well as the embroidery pattern (though I've included the one I used if you'd like to try it!). Last Christmas, I created six bespoke pure wool felt stuffies with a voice recorder sewn inside for my family. Each family member received a piece that spoke to their style and literally spoke to them with an individualized message from my two sons. I finally had the opportunity to record my children for my keeping, and create this box to forever hold their small voices, newborn hat, bracelet, and other precious memories. With its magnetic closure, what you choose to place inside the box is yours to decide - so follow your heart!

NOTE: If you are opting to use a voice recorder with your project, you may do so at any time. Follow the directions on the box to record and save the message.

Experience level: Intermediate

Time to make: Approximately 8+ hours (this project includes hand sewing/embroidery)

Instructions:

1. Prepare your templates with a light cardstock. If using a cutting machine, import the box templates. If using a printer, print and neatly cut with scissors.

2. Connect the "Plus Sign-Shaped" box template piece to the "Box Enclosure" template piece with tape and lay out on your 12x18 inch piece of 100% Wool Craft Felt. I am using Petal Pink.

    3. Trace the template. For light-colored felt, I use a Frixion Heat Erasable pen in black, but white erasable marking pens work well on darker felt colors.

    4. Trace the "Heart Template 1 piece" onto your 9x12 inch felt sheet, I am using Midnight Blue. Here I use a white gel pen because only one side will be visible in the final product. Choose what works for your color palette.

    5. Cut with fabric scissors.

OPTIONAL: My son Remy is newly 4-years-old. I gave him a sheet of Sulky Solvy to write his name with a Paper-Mate felt-tip marker. If you want handwriting on your project, simply have your subject write their name, letters, or even a shape. I circled the clearest letters for my project, focusing on readability and size. Then, I cut off a clean corner piece of Sulky Solvy and traced his writing to make a final draft.

This was applied to the Heart template (1 piece) and stitched with REVERSE CHAIN STITCH using two strands of variegated embroidery floss.

NOTE: When using Sulky Solvy, be sure that your embroidery floss is colorfast! Remove the Sulky Solvy according to the instructions. Set aside.

    6. Take the Square template and make two guidelines on the Box Enclosure section of the felt using a disappearing ink marker.

    7. Iron deep creases along your two guidelines. Fold in the other tabs of your Box template and iron four creases. Use this step to remove any Frixion pen markings with the heat of the iron, or a hairdryer.
    8. Begin the box assembly by aligning the sides of the box. Secure the 4 corners with wonder clips or pins.
    9. Use two strands of embroidery floss to BLANKET STITCH the sides of the box. I used color-matched floss, but a contrasting color would look great too!
    10. After all four sides of the box are stitched, fold over the top and side piece and admire your work so far!
    11. Grab the E6000 glue, two neodymium magnets, and a scrap piece of felt that matches your box color.
    12. Stack your magnets and mark an “X” on the top side. This magnet will go on the outside flap of your box. Glue so that the “X” faces outward.
    13. Open the lid, let the second magnet align with its counterpart, and mark the spot on the "Box Front Side 1" pattern piece where the magnet connects evenly.
    14. Remove the second magnet, being sure to keep its polarization aligned with the first magnet and glue to your marked spot on "Box Front Side 1".
    15. Take some scrap felt and cut out a shape that is large enough to cover the magnet. I chose a heart, but feel free to get creative!
OPTIONAL: Add some more bespoke embroidery! Using a Frixion Heat Erasable pen, I drew a cursive “L” for my name and again used a REVERSE CHAIN STITCH with two strands of variegated floss, removing any pen markings with heat.
    16. Now, time to WHIP STITCH APPLIQUÈ the heart-shaped felt over the magnet.
    17. Time for bespoke embroidery! I took my "Heart Template 2 piece", just slightly smaller than the felt heart shape, and drew a template, which is available for you to use! I enjoy freestyling embroidery or using an erasable marker for general guidelines, but I’m using Sulky Solvy for this tutorial.
    18. Place the Sulky Solvy over top of the embroidery pattern, trace the design, cut and apply to the felt heart.
    19. Time to embroider! My design uses FISHBONE STITCH for leaves, FRENCH KNOTS for berries, WOVEN WHEEL for large florals, LAZY DAISY for small florals, SATIN STITCH for detailing, and a WHIPPED BACKSTITCH for the stems.
NOTE: I did not sew FRENCH KNOTS, WOVEN WHEEL, or any bead and  sequin embellishments until after the Sulky Solvy was removed!
OPTIONAL: Add beads and sequins to glam your heart. I also added Sulky Silver Metallic thread to my leaves.
    20. Place a "wonder clip" or pin to your heart as it aligns on your box covering the outer magnet. Use a combination of BLANKET STITCH and WHIP STITCH to finish your project!

Oh, I bet this looks sew lovely! Whether you changed colors, patterns or followed it step-by-step, I hope you enjoyed making this personal, versatile piece. Handmade crafts are special, and adding your touches makes them even more meaningful! I can’t wait to see what you make!
